BIOGRAPHICAL NARRATIVE
Since May 2006, Malia has served as Trustee Aide for Haunani Apoliona, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. Preceding her work with OHA, Malia served as Chief of Staff/Office Manager for State Representative Mele Carroll of Maui. Prior to that she served briefly as an Aide to former State Representative Sol Kahoʻohalaha.
Born and raised on Maui, Malia is a “Maui Girl.” Following graduation from H.P. Baldwin High School in Wailuku, Maui, she attended Pepperdine University in Malibu,California, where she received her Bachelors of Arts in Political Science.
Malia has studied and performed all kinds of dance including, Egyptian Belly Dance, Salsa, and Tahitian. However, hula is her chosen art. Having danced for Kumu Hula Uluwehi Gurerrero since she was a keiki and performed professionally at the Maui Prince for over ten years, she enjoys performing for weddings, conventions, private parties, or just kanikapila.
Malia is an avid traveler. Her travels have led her to England, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Nicaragua, Peru, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil,Australia, throughout the U.S and beyond. Her travels have also allowed her to live in many different cities throughout the world including her home, Maui, Honolulu,Washington, D.C., Costa Rica, Malibu, CA, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. All of her travels have helped her to appreciate the beauty of our island home, and have inspired her with a passion to protect and preserve the unique host culture, people and place we call home.
Malia hopes to continue her studies through graduate school, to equip her with the knowledge to do more for her community and eventually (not anytime soon!) return home to her island Maui.
